NBA Rumor: Ja Morant Heads to Raptors in Proposed Trade

Now that Anthony Davis is out of commission for months, and Trae Young has landed with the Washington Wizards, Ja Morant has become the prime target of attention as the NBA speeds toward the deadline on Feb. 5th.

And while some reports suggest that there isn't much of a market for the combustible point guard, the Toronto Raptors, as they always are when a superstar hits the trade market, have made their way into the conversation.

Morant has apparently told players around the NBA and some of his former coaches that he's done with the Grizzlies and won't be playing another game for them, per Mike Wright of ESPN.

Sam Quinn of CBS Sports has proposed a deal that would send Morant north of the border, to Toronto.

Toronto Raptors receive:

  • Ja Morant

Memphis Grizzlies receive:
  • Immanuel Quickley
  • Ochai Agbaji
  • Garrett Temple

This proposal comes just two days after Quickley celebrated his best moment of the season, hitting the game-winning three at the buzzer against the Charlotte Hornets.

Quinn himself questions the validity of this type of move for Toronto, who are already a three-point challenged team at best. Giving up one of their best in that department for Morant, who isn't a shooter, is a bit of an issue. Additionally, the Grizzlies' volatile guard doesn't seem to fit other elements of the team's offense and defense either.

"Toronto's No. 3-ranked defense could integrate Morant comfortably enough, but its pass-heavy, egalitarian offense is a more questionable fit."

Yet, in summing up, Quinn says of the Raptors, who are well-known for making big splashes for star players, "until they actually make their big swing, whatever it is, they're going to be linked to trades like this."

From the Grizzlies' side of this, Quickley would provide the team with a competent defender in the backcourt, a player who is a consistent three-point shooter, and "a generally low-maintenance player". All of those things are everything Morant is not. That, alone, may be the reason Memphis would jump at this.
