Steve Kerr Admits It’s ‘Delusional’ That Warriors Could Knock Off OKC or Spurs

The Golden State Warriors are still hoping to bring in another difference maker for this season to get back to the big dance. Or at least to have a chance to do so.

But head coach Steve Kerr readily admits that it's "delusional" to think that his team can compete with the San Antonio Spurs and Oklahoma City Thunder in the next couple of years.

“We know we’re not where we were five, six years ago. But we did win a title three years ago... We weren't quite ourselves, but we were good enough to give ourselves a swing at the plate... That's what we want this year, to just give ourselves an opportunity...

"I just don’t want anybody to think that we’re all delusional and thinking we should be competing for titles year in and year out with San Antonio and Oklahoma City the next few years. That’s not realistic.”

The Warriors are a mere 18-17 this season, in the 8-seed in the Western Conference. That puts them a full 12 games back of the first-place Thunder, and eight games back of the second-place Spurs.

But they have a valued trade piece in Jonathan Kuminga, and some other assorted parts, whereby they could put together a package to perhaps get themselves another star in order to give them that "swing at the plate."

They've been linked to the likes of Anthony Davis, as well as Giannis Antetokounmpo, Derrick White and Michael Porter Jr. Any of them, in varying degrees, would lift the Dubs up a level in their chase to have a chance to be a serious contender this season. No, not along the lines of SGA & OKC or the Wembanyama-led Spurs, but at least more than an afterthought, if everything broke just right.
